We present a selection of Sasha Braulov's embroideries from the “Architecture of the Avant-Garde” series. The works are available for viewing and purchase in the gallery or online.
Ksenia Malich:
“Sasha Braulov offers a completely new way of thinking and perceiving Soviet architecture of the early post-revolutionary decades. He employs a naïve technique, in terms of the accepted hierarchy of genres, while also using one of the oldest techniques of decorative applied arts. On a black background, on uneven patches of fabric, with a limited color palette and reduced details, the outlines of power plants and kiosks, stadiums and depots, cultural centers and hangars emerge stitch by stitch. Just as the ornamentation of ancient Russian embroidery preserves the symbolism of collective myth in its simplified geometry, here the constructivist half-ruin transforms into a monumental sign.”
